Celebrating king's day
Imintanout, High Atlas Mountains

Imintanout is a big market town on the edge of the High Atlas mountains. Its population is almost entirely Berber-speaking. Here, people are gathered for the annual holiday festivities that take place on Throne Day, March 3. This holiday commemorates King Hassan II's becoming king in 1962.

You can see that virtually everyone in this region is in traditional dress. Everyone is wearing their best, which for the men includes a white turban.

As is their custom, the men stand together, leaving the women and children together. You can see the women standing along the hill; the men are down closer to the center of activities.
