Selling a gouna'a
Zagora Suq, Draa Valley, Province of Ouarzazate

A woman in the weekly market, or suq, of Zagora in the heart of the Draa Valley in southern Morocco. She displays a woman's overgarment, which is called a gouna'a. The gouna'a is cheap, light, and always black cotton cloth embellished with designs made of yarn.

Why is it black? Black is hot in the hot climate of Zagora. Ask them and the women will say they like it black - black is good, black is pleasing; black is the color women wear. Is it hot? "No." There really is no good answer as to why the gouna'a is always black.
