This island is often called Thera by the Greeks. Alternate layers of lava flows and pyroclastic eruptions are visible on this cliff which was originally a part of a large composite volcano before it was destroyed during an explosive eruption in the second half of the 16th century, BC. Many scholars attribute the legend of the destruction of the fabled Atlantis to the sudden destruction of the thriving Minoan culture at this time. Also visible in this image are the white structures of the town of Thira perched on the top of the cliffs above the sea. |
