This view of yellow pine forest was taken near North Bloomfield at an elevation of approximately 3,300'. The yellow pine belt runs along the western side of the Sierra Nevada from 1200-5500' in the north to 2500-9000' in the south. Dominant tree species include yellow pine (center, foreground) (Pinus ponderosa), sugar pine (Pinus lambertiana), Douglas fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii), white fir (Abies concolor), incense cedar (Calocedrus decurrens), and black oak (Quercus kelloggii). The understory in this image is dominated by the aromatic "mountain misery" (Chamaebatia foliolosa). Also known as "tarweed" or Kit-kit-dizze, these common names were given by old-timers who were annoyed by the pungent, ubiquitous aroma of these plants. |
