Tropical Forest Canopy

Hana, Maui, Hawaii
January 1986

In tropical forests where species diversity is great and competition for light intense, the forest canopy often develops multiple levels where different tree species grow to varying heights to capture light that may filter through the leaves of taller trees. In this image trees of different heights creating multiple levels can be seen. The image also reveals the diversity of species in this forest, although many visible here are introduced and not native to Maui.
