John Muir described California's riparian forests as "Jungles of tropical luxuriance." Yet, for all their original grandeur, these forests have dwindled to less than 12,000 acres--less than 2% of their original extent in the Sacramento Valley. Because of the availability of water during the dry summer, riparian forests remain one of California's most important biomes. Their remarkable diversity and abundance of plant and animal life equal or exceed that of any other California habitat for which data are available. |
