Epdedra

Death Valley, Aguereberry Pt.
April 1978

Species in the genus Ephedra grow in steppe and desert regions around the world. They have a characteristic look of minimized leaf surface to conserve moisture and photosynthesize in their grey or olive green stems. This plant has also been used for medicinal purposes in many places in the world. The Chinese used it to relieve congestion and in North America both native Americans and settlers used it for a tea (hence the common name "Mormon Tea"). More recently the heart stimulant Ephedrine has been derived from this plant.
