Bristlecone (Pinus longaeva) and Limber Pine (Pinus flexilis) predominantly occur on dolomitic soils in the White Mountains. Although these soils are low in nutrients, their whitish color helps reflect sunlight, keeping soil temperatures cooler than in the surrounding soils derived from sandstone. Cooler soil temperatures allows for greater water retention and in these two pine species, water availability is a more significant limiting factor than nutrients. This image shows the clear boundary of the pine grove, also revealing the location of dolomitic soils on this site. |
