Cactus: Close-up: Beavertail pricklypear

Death Valley
April 1979

Cacti use succulence and the ability to store water in plant tissues as a strategy to survive water shortage. Many cacti species also bear colorful, showy flowers to attract pollinating insects. Beavertail pricklypear (Opuntia basilaris) is common in Death Valley along the valley floor, fans and upper desert slopes.
