Robert Apte's Eye Vue the World

This web site represents sixty years of photography.

The photographs were taken throughout the years as a record of my enjoyment of scenery and a growing interest in the world beyond my origins. Looking back, I never thought that I would be so fortunate as to be able to know such a broad swathe of the world.

I present my I images here to inform, educate, and hopefully provide pleasure to those who have the curiosity to look at what I have seen. While many of the images are intrinsically beautiful, many provide visual information that is equally important, while still others may not bring pleasure to the eye, but stimulate one to see that this is an incredibly varied and amazing world in which we live.

In addition to the geographic hierarchy there are three sections of the web site that deviate from what I call straight photography. They are as follows:

Grainy Photography
I found that some of the work done by early 20th century photographers pleased me as the graininess of the images provided a texture that is almost palpable in that they enhanced the images' appearance. A good example of this is the work of the French photographer, Eugene Atget. Through some experimentation I was able to emulate this effect.
Subjects with Altered Backgrounds (SWAB)
In this group of work I have used a technique through Photoshop to either alter or eliminate the background, enhancing the interest of the subjects. The subjects are usually people in their natural environments. Often the environment by which the subject is surrounded seriously detracts from the subject's appearance. By altering the environment I believe I have produced a more compelling image. This certainly is an unorthodox technique and I might be considered a maverick in using this method of presenting my work.
Photoiconographs (photo-icono-graph )
This is a term I have devised myself to label images that I have evolved from an original photograph. It represents an icon that is of photographic origin, but modified in a very special way. The way I fell into this new genre of art was somewhat accidental and will be described in the beginning of this series of images.

A serious photography critic from a major museum on the West Coast stated, in response to looking at my work, I quote "You have taken a different road, and like all innovators you must walk alone." It is my hope that others will join me in this journey with a departure from more traditional photography and allow experimentation

As of 2006 there have already been three exhibits of this work: at the Triton Museum of Art in Santa Clara California, The Gallery of the Berkeley City Club, and at the Margo Lowe Gallery in Berkeley California.

The vast bulk of the web site consists of straight photography taken with Nikon 35 mm film cameras, a Hasselblad, a Widelux, a 4-x5 view camera, and more recently with a number of Nikon digital cameras.
