Macquarie Island
Robert Apte's Eye Vue the World

Macquarie Island was visited in February 2005. It is a World Heritage Site situated in the Southern Ocean between Antarctica and Tasmania, somewhat southwest of New Zealand, at 55 degrees latitude. It was declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. It is under the administration of Tasmania

A former whaling station, the island is now important for both its geological interest and for its abundant and unique flora and fauna.

The earth science secret of Macquarie Island's unique formation is a source of wonder that has gained the island global recognition. Rock outcrops on the northern part of the island have been forced up from about 6 km below the ocean floor, providing a unique exposure of rocks from the earth's oceanic crust. No drill hole has ever penetrated to these depths and so these exposures provide a rare opportunity for geologists to gain an understanding of geological processes from some of the deepest rocks on earth. A research station there is actively studying this formation.

On Macquarie Island weird forms of kelp and tussock grass abound. On the bays and shores one can see an abundance of elephants seals, many of whom lie molting in the tussock grasses. In addition to a large colony of King Penguin, many other species of sea birds use the island for feeding and breeding. The Wandering Albatross is a common sight.

Perhaps one of the most unique birds seen no where else on the planet is the Royal Penguin. It is the most curious looking of all the many species of penguin. As can be seen in the photo, the Royal Penguin colony stretches over a vast area. Walking within this colony one is overcome by the commotion, the stench and noisy screeching. Nevertheless it is a sight to behold.

There is a small museum at the scientific station to preserve the artifacts from the abandoned old whaling industry.

One is required to have a permit to land on the island and only few groups can visit per year. Visitors on the island are carefully monitored by the scientific community in order to protect the wildlife.
