Icebergs in Antarctica

A visit to the Southern Ocean of the Antarctic, including three Sub-Antarctic Islands, from January 15 to February 5, 2006. The transportation was on the Captain Klebnikov, a working Russian icebreaker.

Places visited: Campbell Island, Endeby Island, mainland of the Antarctic continent, and Macquarie Island.

Endeby Island; January 17, journeyed to land by zodiac boat.

Campbell Island, January 18, visited Perseverance Bay, journeyed to land by zodiac boat.

Mainland of Antarctica, January 20 to January 30. Sites visited: Cape Adare, Dry Valleys, Cape Royds, Cape Hallet Evan, McMurdo Station, Scott Base, Cape Bird, Terra Nova Bay, Italian Research Station, Abandoned Russia Research Station, Cape Hallet, Oates Land, Sabrina Island.

The weather in general was fine and sea mostly calm. All of the visits from the ship to the land were made by helicopter.

Macquarie Island, February 4 and 5.

Sites visited: abandoned whaling station, research station, beaches populated by elephant seals, royal penguins and king penguins.
